How authority is organized, justified, and exercised — the institutions of rule, the basis of legitimacy, and the structure of the state.
The institutions and practice of rule — how the state is organized and authority is exercised and justified. This is the project’s spine: state structure and administration; the basis and claims of legitimacy (sacral kingship, dynastic right, revolutionary mandate, popular sovereignty); succession and the transfer of power; centralization versus decentralization; state-building and state collapse; and constitutional and legal order as the formal architecture of governance.
